Crash Printing
Yayyyy. Crash printing was so much fun. We got to use wooden set type and just basically do anything we wanted to for our design. I incorporated my train along with my word into the design and used bright colors for printing. Here's a couple pictures of me printing, and what it looks like when its finished. I'll definitely be posting more photos of it along with my final prints for the train! :-)

Printing Project

For our LAST PROJECT we are using a Vandercook press and polymer plate to create prints. This is going to be AWESOME! Anyways, our class is going to create designs that relate to the theme of "-made". Each of us were given a prefix for the term, and mine is 'man'. Therefore, I need to create a concept around the word man-made. We need to embrace the immediacy of our reactions to the term and for our next class we need some rough concept sketches. I have been brainstorming many ideas, and I thought of wrapping my concept nature vs. man. For instance, there are many things in our world today that we find nature has made, but what about the trees that are aligned perfectly in a row? or the fruits that are injected with chemicals to make bigger? I have been thinking of other instances where people have taken advantage of the beauty of nature. Skyscrapers, Powerlines, etc. There are so many things man-made, or (hu)man-made that I have no idea how to narrow this down! If you have any suggestions, let me know!

This is our group's final brochure for Theresa and the Greenway community. After sending a rough draft, she critiqued and sent us comments on what she would like improved in our brochure design. Some of these comments included a lot of blank space on the design, front panel was not descriptive enough, the layout on the inside text doesn't capture her very much, etc. After taking her comments into consideration, we reworked the rough draft and created a final product. We added more visuals, edited the text inside the brochure, and re-worked the front cover. We even added a biker to our path (I was pretty excited about this)! Overall, I think our design is very cohesive and would make me want to become part of the movement of the Greenway.

For my series, I have decided to create a campaign for a product that I have created. These line of products are called Youthanasia and their slogan is "Never get old, never die". Youthanasia is a spoof off of Euthanasia, which is medically-assisted death. I have created three posters to advertise for this campaign and I plan to make changes after our critique on March 11th.

Greenway Promo Piece

Our newest project being worked on is a piece for the Midtown Greenway Coalition. Theresa Nelson, a Greenspace and Art Programs Director, came to speak to our class about the Midtown Greenway Coalition. The Greenway is a 5.2-mile trail connecting the Mississippi River with the Chain of Lakes. It is used as a bike and walking trail as well as an ecological connection for people and birds. For this piece, we were asked to create a possible campaign for the Greenway and our group has decided to create a brochure to promote its organic nature as well as available community involvement. Posted are beginning computer sketches that our group has created for this project. We plan to add hand-drawn elements to create the organic feel of the Greenway as well as promoting how to become "Part of the movement".

Final Persuasive Poster

Although nothing is every finished in the design world, this is my final for the persuasive poster. There were many things that were said during the critique. For instance, the message wasn't coming across clearly enough. Also, there were issues with the bald man therefore I put his original hair on the man to re-enforce the be happy with yourself message. I changed the font, and made it into a more artistic piece in my poster. This emphasized more on the vintage feel that I was trying to maintain throughout my poster. I also added the dotted border, and made the face come out of the picture plane. Overall, my poster was fairly successful. I would still love to make more changes because this could potentially be a future portfolio piece once the series is completed.

Informative Series

Our next assignment is to create a series of posters, or related pieces that expand upon the theme developed in our persuasive poster. For my inspiration, I have looked at 1950s advertisements showing ways to enhance your look. For example, make-up, tanning lamps, plastic surgery, and botox. I want to encorporate the saying, "Be Happy. Be Yourself", but I want the audience to be different in each poster within my series. For my teenage audience, I want to emphasize on fake tanner (I drew my inspirations from a 1950s ad which is posted). Also, for that same audience I had an idea about body weight and overall body image (another picture that I posted of a doll). Lastly, I thought of an older woman who has wrinkles where I could advertise/campaign for anti-wrinkle cream or botox. I really want to emphasize being comfortable in your own skin no matter how old, young, big, small, tall, short you are. I have attached a few pictures that I found that were funny and somewhat inspiring for this next project. Overall, I am excited to create a series using the same concept!

Persuasive Poster

For our second assignment, we were asked to create a poster that persuades a public audience to think of a problem more critically. We had to choose a subject that we feel strongly about and consider ourselves as the activist for its campaign. For this assignment, I chose a toupee for my product. I chose this because for one I had no idea what to do with this poster, and for two, I think that bald men should embrace how they look instead of trying to hide it behind a tacky piece of fake hair on top of their heads! So, the picture that I have posted with this assignment is the start to my project. I have decided to put different hairstyles on the head of a man to show that no matter who you are, you should embrace the person that you are, and not who you try to be. This goes along with the slogan, "Be Happy. Be Yourself".

Book Review Assignment

This is our first assignment for Graphic Studio 1! We were asked to review a design book of our choice and create a PowerPoint presentation on our personal review of the book. For this assignment, I chose the book Design for the Other 90%. This book gave designers insight on the 90% of the world's total population and how almost half of these people cannot easily access food, clean water, or shelter. Design for the Other 90% showed the steps in which architects, designers, professors, and students take to provide products and services for the less fortunate. I was inspired by this book because it showed the importance of what future consumers and clients want and need as well as gave me great insight on designing necessities for the poor versus making products more stylish, efficient, and durable for the top 10% of the world's population. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment because it allowed me to both chose a book of my choice, and the opportunity to learn about design in a different perspective.
